Owen's Future- First Birthday Tradition

Several years ago my friend from South Korea was teaching my students about Korean traditions. She taught the students about a fortune telling tradition at the baby's first birthday. You can read more here. Basically, you put certain objects in front of the baby that represent different careers or futures. The object the baby grabs first predicts his or her future.

I thought this idea sounded like so much fun, and we did it two years ago for Landon's first birthday! We decided to change it up a bit and let each person choose an item to place in front of him that they thought would represent his future. Of course we continued the tradition with Owen! It was great because all four grandparents were there to choose an item! Emily, Hunter, and Casey were able to join in too! Philip captured a video of Owen's choice!

In the end, he chose the toy computer that I put in the circle and the hammock that Emily put in the circle. I said that he was going to be technologically savy and a computer genius, and Emily said he was going to love adventure!! We'll see in about 15 years if we are right! :) Either way, we will always love that sweet boy and support him in whatever his heart desires!
