Landon's Future- First Birthday Tradition

Landon has had a wonderful birthday weekend! His circus party was PERFECT, and he had so much fun celebrating with his friends and family! I will post about his birthday party in the next couple days.

Today was my sweet boy's actual birthday. Several years ago my friend from South Korea was teaching my students about Korean traditions. She taught the students about a fortune telling tradition at the baby's first birthday. You can read more here. Basically, you put certain objects in front of the baby that represent different careers or futures. The object the baby grabs first predicts his or her future.

I thought this idea sounded like so much fun! We decided to change it up a bit and let each person choose an item to place in front of him that they thought would represent his future. I planned to do it on Landon's actual birthday and with just the immediate family, but some of the family had already gone home and I forgot to get their objects.

I took a great video of everyone explaining their objects and why they chose that object, but I can't get that part of the video to upload. :(

Here's what everyone choose and what they said-

Mommy (me)- A book-- May he always love to read and learn!

Daddy- Keens-- May he love a good adventure!

Lolo- A Net-- She said he was so curious, so maybe he would be a scientist!

Popsy- A bear-- May he love the outdoors and animals.

Grandaddy- A ball- May he love sports!

Emily- A petroglyph from one of our trips to Hawaii--May he be a world traveler!

Hunter-- An iphone-- May he create the future's greatest invention!

And here's a video so you can see what Landon chose!

Landon chose the net from Mom! Then Emily decided that she would remove the first choice and see what he chose second, third, fourth, etc. He chose the net, then the ball, the iphone, Philip's Keens, and finally the petroglyph. He was not at all interested in the bear from Dad or the book from me!! Even after Emily moved the objects, he crawled over to the first five he chose rather than picking the bear or the book! So funny and such a fun first birthday tradition!
