Wednesday night Tucker came over so Lindsay Ann and Eric could go on a dinner date (do you notice the babysitting exchange? Best Thing Ever!) We loved having Tucker over! He is so precious! Poor baby was teething, but it reminded me of those days with Landon, and we were pulling out all our old tricks to try to keep them from bothering him. Honestly the best method was distraction…and Landon was awesome at that! Tucker loved watching and interacting with Landon! And Landon loves Tucker! Lindsay Ann and I are pretty sure that he can say, “Tuck!”
But at the end of the evening is when the injury drama occurred! LA and Eric had returned from dinner. LA and I were sitting on the couch with the boys, and I asked Landon to go pick us out a book to read. He went and got one of his library books, then came back and handed it to me and lifted his arms for me to pull him up on my lap. I pulled him up like I usually do, but he and I were both turned kind of weird (and he’s getting heavier for my weakling arms). As I was pulling him up, I heard a couple of pops. He immediately started crying. I looked at LA kind of panicked and asked if she heard it too. She said she had heard it. We weren’t sure if it just hurt him for a minute or what. He snuggled in my arms and cried on and off while we said our goodbyes to the Hammarlunds. It was kind of late and he was falling asleep, so we decided to try to let him get some rest and assess what was happening, rather than just racing to the ER. Of course, we made him sleep with us so we could assess him throughout the night. He slept fine, but I was a WRECK! He held his arm to his chest and would moan in his sleep if he moved it. In between my nightmares, I cried and looked up stuff on the Internet. I thought I had dislocated his shoulder!
In the morning, Landon still would not move his arm. He was in a lot of pain. I called Sharon and Emily to get advice and have them on call just in case I had to bring him to another place where they would Xray or have to pop something back into place. Philip had a ton of meetings that were going to be tricky to reschedule, and I was just nervous that I couldn’t watch the doctors do something painful to him by myself. Of course they both said they would come as soon as we needed! In fact, Sharon said she wanted to go ahead and come anyways since she had to drive through Atlanta traffic to get to Athens. Emily and Hunter called and texted throughout the morning to make sure we were okay! Everyone was so worried about the Lan Man! I didn’t want to call any of the grandparents because I knew they would all be so worried and there was only so much they could do! They all live four hours away, and I didn’t want them to spend the whole day just worrying about him.
When I called our doctor, I brought Landon upstairs to Owen’s room (which is a playroom right now) so he wouldn’t hurt himself. As I talked with the doctor, I could hear Landon moaning as he was trying to use his right arm to play with his toys. A few minutes later, after we were both ready and about to leave for the doctor, Landon started acting completely normal. It was the craziest thing I have ever seen! I took a video and sent it to Philip because I knew he would not believe the change!
When we got to the doctor, I told them what happened and about how he was acting normal now. I was so confused! Basically it turns out that he had Nursemaid’s Elbow (and I thought it was his shoulder…). With this, the elbow pops out of place and causes a lot of pain. The child typically stops using the arm and lays it across his/her chest like Landon did. It is painful when the arm moves, put it is a pretty easy fix where the doctor can just pop it back in place. Sometimes, like in Landon’s case, the child will do it himself. God was definitely looking after us, because I imagined the whole day to be so much worse! Philip and I were so happy that Landon felt better and would not have any more pain! Aunt Sharon pulled in to the house as we got back from the doctor and ended up staying the whole day to play with the Lan Man! We went to the mall and had lunch at the Piccadilly (my Thursday pregnancy obsession!) That evening when Philip got home from work, we went over to Emily’s to help her move into her new house. Crazy that what we thought was going to be a rough day turned into a great day! We sure thank God for our blessings!
