Graduate School Can Be Fun Too!

I teach a graduate class at UGA on Tuesday nights. This semester, the class is Methods and Materials for Teaching the Gifted. I always try to plan engaging classes, but I must admit that the last two weeks have been especially fun!

Last week, my wonderful friend and colleague Abby came and co-taught with me. We taught the class about geocaching and how it can be incorporated into the classroom. Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunt using GPS technology. It allows students to explore so many different concepts related to math, science, and even Language Arts in an exciting way!

We led a few activities outside first to practice using the GPS and then sent the students on a hunt to find 2 different geocaches on campus! Such  a fun time learning about strategies to engage our students and allow them opportunities to process content in a deep and meaningful way!

This week, I was lucky to have none other than Principal Philip Brown (hehe! The husband!) come and guest lecture in my class about mentoring and leadership! Not only was he fantastic, but he brought along 4 high school student leaders in his building to talk to my students and share the leadership opportunities that were the most meaningful for them during their educational experience. I have always believed that seeing is believing, and I hope my students learned a great deal from seeing these inspiring young leaders and learning how teachers inspired them!
